A suburban house with a solid exterior architectural design, soft inside thanks to an airy skylight and a courtyard with trees reaching out in the warm sun.
The beautiful living space we present to you today is located in Malabe, a suburb of Colombo in Colombo District, Sri Lanka. The project has an area of 430m² designed by the architects of ICONAST and completed in 2021.
The project, named “Casa de Silva”, is the home of a young family consisting of parents and school-age children. Both husband and wife drive a car from Thalahena, Malabe to the center of Colombo every day to work. Therefore, they wish that after a long tiring day, when returning home, they must enjoy a comfortable space and connect with fresh nature as much as possible. The idea of building a skylight and courtyard in the house also came from there.
It can be said that the courtyard of the building is the best highlight, it provides different views from one area to another in the house. The courtyard with green trees, airy height, bright skylight, helps the atmosphere inside the house become “on par” with the outdoors. This architecture helps to connect the spaces in a single vision although at different levels. All family members can easily connect and enjoy the cool garden space.
The spacious space inside the house is formed by a large hall as a common place for the whole family. The kitchen, dining room, open plan kitchen, sharing the garden space create ventilation, giving the feeling that the area is larger than reality. The ventilation system through the courtyard helps keep the house cooler without consuming electricity for air conditioning equipment.
The dining room is designed to open through transparent sliding doors to wooden floors to create a space for airy outdoor dining. Large openings and neutral colors are used, combined with natural wood furniture elements as well as highlighting the importance of plants to create a light, relaxing living space. More private areas of the home, such as the bedroom and bathroom, are designed in a more solid “block” than the common living space to ensure privacy. The remaining areas are directly connected to the outside space as desired from the beginning of the young couple.
