1. What is Phimmoi.net?
Phimmoi.net is a website to watch movies online without copyright in Vietnam. Besides, according to statistics from Alexa site, this is also the movie website with the 17th highest traffic volume in Vietnam. Accordingly, the number of people visiting this website is about 60 to 80 million visits per month according to SimilarWeb’s data.
Before being criminally prosecuted, this website was blocked by Internet service providers in the country simultaneously. However, despite being blocked and withdrawn from ads, Phimmoi.net is still constantly “reviving” with a series of different domain names. That’s why this site is known as “the king of blows”.
2. Continuously “spring up” despite being banned
Although it is a “piracy” movie website, Phimmoi.net has never been taken down. Each time it was banned, this website continuously changed its domain name, from Phimmoi.net to Phimmoiz.net or Phimmoizz.net to bypass the authorities. Basically, the new names have the same look and feel as the original.
In 2017, the Vietnam Content Alliance (VCA) discussed with the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information about the issue of copyright infringement. After reviewing 50 pirated websites provided by VCA, the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information has decided to withdraw ads on piracy sites from July 23, including Phimmoi. net.
Even so, after only 1 day, Phimmoi.net continued to operate as usual. After a while, on June 17, 2020, Phimmoi.net was blocked by 3 Internet service providers in Vietnam, VNPT, MobiFone and FPT. Specifically, when logging into this website, users will not be able to find the server IP. However, soon after, Phimmoi.net changed its domain name to Phimmoiz.net.
Until August 22, 2020, Internet service providers in Vietnam continued to block the new domain name Phimmoiz.net, but after only 2 days, this website changed its name to Phimmoizz.net and continued to operate.
On April 24, 2021, despite being blocked from accessing, this website continued to affirm the title of “king of blows” by netizens when it continued to change its name to Phimmoiizz.net.
Most recently, after being criminally prosecuted, this website continued to be renamed to Phimmoiplus.net. The people behind this website even added a affirmative notice at the bottom of the page: “We are back with a new mission, Phimmoizz.net, Phimmoi.net, Phimmoiizz.net are just old domain names, visit now with the new domain Phimmoiplus.net”. However, this “revival” alone, this website was “discolored” after only half a day of reviving with a new name.
3. Phimmoi.net was criminally prosecuted
On August 19, 2021, netizens stirred when Phimmoi.net was officially prosecuted by Ho Chi Minh City police for copyright infringement. Besides, according to information from VOV, the person behind the largest website in Vietnam has also been revealed. Through the investigation process, the authorities have determined, this person’s name is Nguyen Tuan Tu (Lam Dong).
Accordingly, this person built the website Phimmoi.net in 2014 with the aim of showing movies online on the Internet platform. In addition, Tu also hired 2 other people to program, manage and operate the website. It is known that by illegally copying cinematic works without the permission of the owner, the people behind this website have collected a “huge amount of money”.
4. Capital is 0 dong but earns billions every week
With its position as a website with 60 to 80 million visits per month, it is currently ranked 17th among the most visited websites in Vietnam. With this amount of traffic, Phimmoi.net has earned a large amount of advertising money, including gambling ads. Advertisements for lottery services, lottery games, online casinos, cockfighting, horse racing are attached to every corner of this website. Not to mention, when going to watch any movie at this website, in the first 5 seconds, viewers are forced to watch an online casino advertisement. According to a price list of Phimmoi.net published by VOV newspaper, the banner price list of this website with the lowest position is 18 million VND/week and can be up to 200 million VND/week.
With 36 banner positions on this site, the people behind this website can earn billions every week when these positions are filled.
In addition, every time the audience clicks on the advertisement before going to watch any movie, for every 1000 views, they will earn 20,000 VND. Despite earning a “huge” amount of money, the cost that the people behind this website spend is very little.
According to information from Zing news, this pirated movie website uses international domain names at a cheap price, only a few hundred thousand VND per year. Besides, the resource on this website is to illegally copy movies without spending any capital. When blocked by Google, the people behind Phimmoi.net only need to spend to buy an unlimited Google Drive account to store resources for about 150 thousand to 300 thousand dong.
Currently, the case of Phimmoi.net being criminally prosecuted has attracted the attention of netizens for the past few days.
