As the pandemic keeps us indoors and unemployment grows, many people have sought to turn their pastimes or hobbies — think dyeing ties, making jewelry, teaching yoga — into activities. income. I am not one of them.
During the lockdown, just getting through the day and doing my job, I feel like a huge accomplishment. I’m not sure I was able to do a side run. My host, Fast Company social media editor Christina Royster, hosts her own podcast, Young, Black and Opinioned, and has done some work as a content creator on Instagram . Even she says navigating a side hustle and a day job can seem daunting.
To learn more about how to combine both responsibilities and be able to turn your hobby into an additional source of income, we reached out to Jasmine Lawrence, founder of Eden BodyWorks, whose hair care products and natural body is sold nationwide at Target and Amazon. Lawrence founded the company at the age of 13 after seeing a need for better personal care products in his community. As the company grew, she also completed her studies. Now, in addition to her role as CEO of her own company, she is also the product manager of the Daily Robot Project at X.
What’s the first thing Lawrence advises? Don’t think of hustling with you as a side business. Instead, think of yourself as someone with two jobs. “I can’t call it a side hustle. I think it makes too much sense to be a side hustler. If anything, my career in tech has always felt like a side hustle to me,” she said. “[Running my own company is] that came naturally because it was a great fit for my inherent strengths and skills. The language I use now is ‘dual occupation’—[I think about it in] the same way that you don’t stop being a wife when you become a mother or an individual when you get married. “
