The shift to remote work during the pandemic has changed employee expectations. In turn, job seekers also change their expectations. An EY study found that more than half would quit if their company didn’t offer flexibility. Miranda Kalinowski, Facebook’s head of global recruiting, said that to adapt to the new workplace, hiring has to pivot with it, and changes can happen as well.
“Last year, we hired more than 10,000 technical and product people,” says Kalinowski. “I am grateful that we were able to continue hiring throughout 2020; I know not all companies are in that situation. We have more than three billion people trusting our products and services every month. Seems like everyone is depending on [our products] more than ever. We need to continue to hire good builders to keep them running and fast and reliable. “
Attracting so many people requires social media platforms to change their recruiting methods.
Looking for new features
The remote work arrangement requires the new employee’s strengths. Kalinowski says she’s been looking for candidates who demonstrate strong conflict resolution and an effective communication style.
“These are attributes that have certainly been amplified during the pandemic,” she said. “And we continue to look for those things today. While Facebook has a strong infrastructure to support working from home, this is a turning point for us as we are used to placing a lot of emphasis on in-person work.”
Try new approaches
Recruiters have also adapted their strategies to reach candidates and achieve greater success with less technology-intensive methods. Traditionally, recruiters would send an email or LinkedIn message. However, during the pandemic, many people have grown tired of email. Therefore, some candidates prefer to receive a phone call or a text message. “That brings us back to some of the less commonly used, but highly effective, methods,” says Kalinowski.
Lead with empathy
Facebook recruiters are also well aware that candidates live in different backgrounds. That means one size of hiring won’t fit all, Kalinowski said.
“We recognize some people are combining both learning from home and working remotely,” she said. “Some are navigating serious job loss or illness. We really want to lead with empathy in our relationships with people. “
Facebook recruiters took the time to check in with candidates to see how they were doing. While some are interested in participating in the interview process, others are reluctant to introduce the extra change or complexity into their lives that a job change would bring.
Pass the virtual interview challenge
Kalinowski says the pivot to virtual interviews is also a big change.
“In a typical interview, there’s a cultural experience you’re trying to create with candidates, and that happens more easily in person than in real life,” she says. “We often do office tours and show people around to get a real taste of what their day will involve. We want to help people understand what it’s like to work here if they haven’t stepped foot in the office. “
