Bat Trang House is a project located in a prime location of Bat Trang commune, Gia Lam district, Hanoi capital. The project was designed by the team of VTN Architects on an area of 220m², with a total floor area of 740m². This is also the project that brought the Wallpaper*Design Awards 2021 in the category “Best New Private House” for architect Vo Trong Nghia and his associates.

Bat Trang Pottery Village is an ancient village with a rich culture and history with more than a thousand years old. Therefore, the façade of Bat Trang House has shown the ceramic culture, which is the pride of local people. While the exterior is inspired by the traditional beauty of the past, the interior of the house also ensures convenience and comfort for today’s modern living. The layout of the space of Bat Trang House is also based on the owner’s dream of the ideal house, where nature and people can harmonize in living space.

The goal of the architects team is to design a house for a multi-generational family with 7 members living together, in addition to a place for relatives to meet each other on weekends or Tet holidays. Besides the function of housing, Bat Trang House is also a place to shop for famous ceramic products of skilled artisans here.

In the context of the traditional culture of the 1000-year-old village, the use of local materials was given priority by the design team. Not only that, the owner of the house is also an expert in ceramics. Therefore, VTN Architects has taken full advantage of this material to create an extremely impressive building.

Ceramics have high aesthetics, rustic beauty and high durability, suitable for the outer layer of the building, so the entire facade is made entirely of ceramic bricks. The bricks are custom-sized to create an alternating rhythm, some spaces “open” and others “closed”. The small gaps created by the placement of bricks act as vents to help circulate air throughout the building. Meanwhile, the large openings of the façade have large patches of greenery, allowing light to pass through.

The spaces inside the house from living room, kitchen to bedroom, … are approached with minimalist design style. Large glass panels are integrated without worrying about the house overheating because direct sunlight is “filtered” by two layers of ceramic facade and green facade. The voids of ceramic walls work especially well, receiving an abundance of natural energy, especially in the summer. The use of air conditioners in this case is not necessary because the three-layer ventilation system “exterior ceramic facade”, “alternative green space” and “doors” ensure the house. “absolutely cool”.

Solar panels as well as rainwater harvesting and reuse systems also participate in the sustainable design. Large window frames, alternating ceramic openings connected by indoor plants create a vivid picture of many layers, changing throughout 4 seasons, giving people a feeling of relaxation and comfort. .

The intimate relationship between people and nature is a very important factor for the design team of VTN Architects. All projects of architect Vo Trong Nghia and his associates ensure a quality of life in harmony with nature and sustainability and friendliness with the environment. The works are designed almost perfectly, to ensure that people living inside their houses always feel the growth of lush green trees, open skylights, fresh breezes, sunshine. dancing gold,… around their daily activities.
